We are a Nova Scotia registered non-profit housing co-operative, dedicated to building community and at-cost housing on Nova Scotia’s South Shore. We are an all-ages development.
We are at the beginning stages of building an Intentional Community, collaborating on all aspects of our housing development, to create our vision of living lighter on the land, and developing a strong sense of community.
Our future residents are taking part in many aspects of the design and development of the community. We will have compact, fully self-contained, private dwellings as well as shared, spacious community amenities. The shared spaces will include a large dining room, kitchen, recreation spaces, meeting rooms, guest rooms, workshops and gardens. We plan to have an optional car-share program.
Our neighbourhood will be designed with environmental sensitivity, sustainability and efficiency in mind. The physical design will consist of compact homes clustered near the common house. The layout of the grounds will provide opportunities for spontaneous connection, while being carefully designed to maintain individual privacy. We expect to have a minimum of 30 homes. The style of homes will be both detached and semi-detached.
Our generous common spaces not only make it possible to live in a smaller home, they also function as the heart of the community, and offer many opportunities for social interaction. Although each home has its own private kitchen, shared meals in the common house are one of the regular events that support relationships among neighbours. The individual homes tend to be smaller than the norm because the shared space is generous.
Our co-operative legal set up allows us to make living in our community more affordable than renting or buying a similar home on the open market.
As a co-operative, members purchase a membership share and pay a housing expense monthly, instead of a mortgage or rent.
